What is Green Fluorite?

Green Fluorite mostly occurs as a pore-filling mineral. It is associated with gypsum, calcite, anhydrite, dolomite, sulfur, and even silver ores. Pure Fluorite crystals are transparent, so the shades Fluorite crystals come in simply depends on impurities in the stone’s chemical composition. 

Where does Green Fluorite come from?

South Africa, China, and Mexico are currently the leading producers of Fluorite. This stone can also be found in Mongolia and Russia. 

Is Green Fluorite toxic?

There are many concerns about Fluorine being dangerous. (Although some crystals related websites prefer to ignore this subject altogether). The perception of Fluorite toxicity comes from the fact that it’s one of the main sources of Fluorine, a very toxic and reactive gas. Small amounts of Fluorine are crucial for preserving the strength of our bones and teeth. But too much of it can cause osteoporosis or tooth decay, potentially harming the kidneys, nerve system, and muscles. If someone has too much Fluorine in his or her body, it can lead to diseases like fluorosis—a painful condition that weakens bones and harms joints.

Fluorite is not the hardest stone ever – it scores four on Moh’s Hardness Scale. That makes it practically water-soluble (well, not exactly, but I’d avoid water at all costs with this stone). 

So some would think that’s how Fluorine gas may get released. 

But in fact, to extract Fluorine from Fluorite, you have to use sulfuric acid. And unless this acid is casually lying around your house, I wouldn’t be too worried. 

And to elaborate further, many other minerals contain Fluorine, while don’t suffer too much from reputational risks. (E.g., topaz). 

And even more than that, Fluorine can naturally be found in water, air, food, etc.  

Can Green Fluorite get wet?

As I mentioned earlier, it’s not the hardest stone. The general rule of thumb is that you only can expose to water stones and minerals that are a 6, or above, on the Moh’s Hardness Scale. (And I actually stick with 7 to be on the safe side). And since Fluorite is a 4, you shouldn’t get it wet.
